Ed Deneka recently advised me of the passing of Lori on December 2, 2021. Following is a Facebook post by her daughter Julie Salyer:

“With a heavy heart, I share the passing of my mother, Lori Skorupa Knowles. Dementia took her from me several years ago, but today the Lord took her to Heaven to be with her husband for eternity. She now joins Jack, her brother, her mother, her father, her stepson Tony, and other family members in a better place. She can remember me again, and I'm sure she is watching down on us all. She did not suffer as she peacefully passed in her sleep.”

Gone but not forgotten – may Lori rest in peace!

2023 Scholarship Awards!

Another great Senior Honors Night where the Class of '62 once again awarded four scholarships to some of Bremen's best and brightest. Mary Lou and I had the pleasure of making the awards and meeting the students and their proud parents.

This year’s recipients were:

Anthony JaMari Simpson

 $1,000

  Western Illinois University

Nelly Montserrat Yspango

$750

  University of Missouri

Sophia Marie Pritchett

$500

  St. Xavier University

Christopher Perez

$500

  South Suburban CC

Each student had to apply for one of our scholarships and then be selected by the Bremen Scholarship Awards Committee. Selection is based on GPA, extracurricular activities, school spirit, and community service. All of our recipients received multiple recognitions during the course of the evening.

The Bremen administration, faculty, and staff once again expressed their deep appreciation to all those who graciously contributed to our scholarship fund, which is fully funded at $2,750 per year for the next nine years!

We also had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Ed Bruell's daughter who awarded a scholarship in his memory. Mr. Bruell was not only the Chairman of the Language Arts Department, he also composed the words to the Bremen Fight Song

"Red and Gray, We are loyal to you... "!

Class of '62 Scholarship Program

Words alone cannot adequately describe the value of what we have accomplished -  thank you!

  1. Since 2016, we have awarded $11,200 in scholarships to 14 deserving graduating seniors!

  2. In 2021-22, we raised $24,740 in additional contributions!

  3. We now have sufficient funds to award $2,750 in scholarships per year for the next ten years!

  4. We will grant four scholarship awards each year in the amounts of $1,000, $750, $500, and $500!

On Senior Honors Night -- Wednesday, May 11th @ 7:00 PM in the Main Gym -we will be awarding our 2022 scholarships, announcing our new program, and presenting Bremen with a plaque listing all of you who have so graciously contributed over the years.

Bremen's administration and staff are so impressed with our efforts that they will be presenting us with a complimentary plaque that will list all past, present, and future Class of '62 scholarship award recipients.

Both plaques will be displayed in the Hallowed Halls of Bremen forever! Those who contributed are now part of Bremen's Class of '62 legacy and Bremen's history!

Congratulations and well done!

January 2, 2022

We hope and pray that 2022 ends up a lot better than the last two years. Though COVID-19 is still running rampant, we now have vaccines, therapeutics, tests, and high-quality masks that can help us mitigate the risk of hospitalization and death. We owe it to ourselves, our families, friends, and neighbors to do what we can to help reduce the spread.

OUR SCHORSHIP PROGRAM

ONE LAST DONATION -- A FINAL REQUEST TO SEAL OUR CLASS LEGACY!

Over the past six years, we granted $11,200 in scholarships to 16 deserving and very appreciative students. This accomplishment is a testimony to all those who have supported this program and our Class as a whole. With the onset of our 60th anniversary, we decided to ask for one last contribution to fund the program for at least five more years.
Well, not surprisingly, the Class of ’62 not only stepped up to that challenge but over-delivered!
THE $10,000 MATCH: A generous classmate not only contributed but also offered to match all 2021 donations dollar-for-dollar up to $10,000. Therefore our challenge was to raise $10,000 in 2021 “match eligible” donations.
YOUR RESPONSE: As of December 17, our “match eligible” donations are $7,978.20! In other words, we are only $2,000 away from reaching our goal!
What does this mean?
1. It means that once we reach our goal and add our “balance on hand,” we will be able to fund the program for ten more years and increase the annual award to $2,500 by adding a $500 scholarship to the three we already have. In other words, we have the potential to award 40 Bremen students scholarships over the next ten years, ten more than initially planned!
2. It also places emphasis on supporting professional training programs in community support areas like nursing, paramedics, electricians, carpenters, plumbers, mechanics, law enforcement, etc. In other words, we believe it takes all types of skills to serve our communities and country, and we are helping.
3. It also means that the Class of ’62 will do what no other Class has done before – this will be our Class Legacy to Bremen.
Why does this matter?
We believe the future of our country depends on having a highly-skilled, diverse workforce. That comes through high-quality education and training. We support Bremen and our communities and country by helping support Bremen’s best & brightest.
In summary:
A big “thank you” to all those who have contributed to date!
Please consider doing so or pledging to do so by April if you already haven’t.
Why by April?
Though the program will run through August 2022, we will award our scholarships on Senior Honors Night in May. We will also announce our scholarship program results to Bremen and District 228 at that time. As part of this announcement, we will present Bremen with a Plaque listing the names of all past and scholarship contributors. We want your name on that Plaque if you have contributed or plan to contribute!
Look, I suspect you, like me, are being inundated with all types of requests for donations. I understand that. We respect your contribution priorities, but we feel being part of our Class of ‘62 Legacy has lasting value.
All that said, we will always respect your decision to contribute or not, and more importantly, we hope that you can join us at one or more of our 2022 60th Anniversary Events.

OUR HALL OF FAME PROGRAM

SHARING OUR SUCCESSES!

As we have said in the past, the Hall of Fame is much more than individual recognition. It’s a way to demonstrate to existing students how they can leverage their Bremen education to do great things.

By “great things,” I mean endeavors in all areas – education, science, medicine, engineering, business, national defense, military service, social work, community service, philanthropy, sports, etc.

With your input, we intend to continue to nominate classmates who can set these examples.

DO YOU HAVE ANY CANDIDATE SUGGESTIONS?

"REACHING-OUT" PROGRAM

SUPPORTING OTHERS IN HARD TMES!

To the greatest extent possible and practical, we will continue to reach out to classmates and their families dealing with difficult situations such as illnesses or deaths.  Sandie (Stephens) Jordan started this program, and we consider it part of what we do best.

LET US KNOW IF WE CAN HELP!

OUR CLASS OF '62 WEBSITE

STAYING CONNECTED!

Based on recent feedback, we will continue to update the website to share relevant information, especially since many of you cannot participate in our face-to-face activities.

IS THE WEBSITE MEETING YOUR EXPECTATIONS?___________________________________

THAT’S OUR PLAN -- YOUR FEEDBACK IS NOT ONLY WELCOME BUT NEEDED!

As we have said in the past, our goal is to serve you and Bremen.  If we are no longer able to do both, we will gladly disband. All of our committee members are involved in many other business, social, and family activities.

However, we feel that what we have done for the Class of ’62 and Bremen has value, so we are committed to supporting those programs you feel have value.

Go Braves!
