2020 -- a New Decade!

Who would have thought in 1962 that we would be welcoming our 6th new decade since graduating!

Now let's take a look at some of our accomplishments:
_____________________________________________

The Class of '62 Scholarship Program
For the 5th consecutive year, we will be awarding three graduating seniors scholarship awards totaling $2,000. This accomplishment was made possible by some very dedicated classmates who have found it in their hearts and budgets to support the program on behalf of the Class of '62.

All classmates are invited to join us on Senior Honors Night in May to make these awards. You will see firsthand the gratitude expressed by the students, their families, and the Bremen staff in recognition of our efforts.

Once again, it's not about the amount or frequency of your contributions, but it's all about the good we as a Class can do for Bremen students who are facing many of the same challenges we faced to further our education, whether it be college or trade school.

Following are the past and present contributors who we sincerely thank:

Glenn Anderson

Betty (Bruner) Slaughter

The Bremen Hall of Fame
It's that time of year again to submit Hall of Fame nominees!
The Bremen Hall of Fame is yet another way for the Class of '62 to support Bremen, and most important, to support Bremen students.

Why?

The Bremen Hall of Fame is not just an honor for the inductee, which it certainly is, but, more importantly, it is a way for our Class to “pay forward” for the education we received at Bremen. By participating in this program, our goal is to set an example for all Bremen students by showing them what they can achieve with a Bremen education.

The Class of '62 Reunion and Hall of Fame Nominating Committee has come to realize what a truly exceptional group of classmates we have. In fact, we feel that we will "run out of breath" long before "we run out of candidates"!

Calling all sponsors!

Our classmates have done some remarkable things in their lives. Therefore, if you know of a classmate who would like to share their successes and life experiences with Bremen and the Bremen students, please let us know.

As a Hall of Fame Sponsor you will be asked to work with the Nominating Committee to collect and prepare the information required by Bremen to submit a candidate fro consideration.

It's important to note that the Nominating Committee has no control over who is accepted. The decision is entirely up to Distinct 228 and Bremen. The Nominating Committee's role is to work with the Sponsor(s)  and Candidate(s) to prepare and submit the nomination forms, which takes a fair amount of both time and effort.

Bottom-line, we know that we have many candidates that have the potential to be accepted. However, we need your help to nominate them.

It's truly a "team effort"!
June 2, 2020

Hi All!  Sorry for the delayed update!

2020: Yikes, what started-out as new decade has turned into a year of many challenges!

However, like many other periods of turmoil that we have all experienced in our lives, let's try to do whatever we need to do to stay safe, help each other wherever and whenever we can, and celebrate whatever victories we have, both large and small!

A small, but noteworthy victory!

For the past several week we have been working with Bremen to understand how they plan to handle their 2020 Graduation and Senior Honors Night, where the scholarships are awarded.

We are very pleased to report that for the first time in Bremen history, we had a Virtual Senior Honors Night. Kudos to the Bremen administration and staff for a job well-done!

The only thing we missed is meeting in-person with our scholarship recipients and their parents  Nevertheless, the awards were greatly appreciated and will be put to good use.

Please join us in congratulating our 2020 scholarship award recipients and a big thanks to all of you who supported them!
These are this year's best & brightest from Bremen!

CLASS OF '62 SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

For the 5th consecutive year, we have awarded graduating seniors scholarship awards. For the past 4 years, we have awarded three scholarships totaling $2,000, with one $500 award going to a student planning to attend a 2-year community college or a trade school. In today's world, we believe vocational training is just as important as college.

This accomplishment has been made possible by several dedicated classmates who have found it in their hearts and budgets to support the program on behalf of the entire Class of '62.

Following are the past and present contributors who we sincerely thank:

THE BREMEN HALL OF FAME

The Bremen Hall of Fame is yet another way for the Class of '62 to support Bremen, and most important, to support the Bremen students.

Why?

There have been many points of view on the value of Hall of Fame, but here is what we believe:

The Bremen Hall of Fame is not just an honor for the inductee, which it certainly is, but, more importantly, it is a way for our Class to “pay forward” for the education we received at Bremen. By participating in this program, our goal is to set an example for all Bremen students by showing them what they can achieve with a Bremen education.

The Class of '62 Reunion and Hall of Fame Nominating Committee has come to realize what a truly exceptional group of classmates we have. In fact, we feel that we will "run out of breath" long before "we run out of candidates"!

We are pleased to report that we have received several recommendations from classmates over the past several months -- i.e., classmates who are willing to sponsor a Hall of Fame candidate. We are also pleased to report that we have submitted a Hall of Fame nomination for 2020.

It's important to note that the Class of '62 Hall of Fame Nominating Committee's does not select candidates. It's goal is to work with the sponsors who recommend candidates to make sure that the suggested candidates meet the minimum criteria established by Bremen. Additionally, our Committee has no control over who is accepted and inducted. The decision is entirely up to Distinct 228 and Bremen.

In other words, it's a "team effort"!
Please join the team!

A CLASS OF '62 UPDATE!

It's been a while since our last update. We're sure that most of you will agree that 2020 continues to be a year of many challenges!

Our main message is:

"Please stay safe and stay in touch!"
Like many other periods of turmoil, let's try to do whatever we can to stay safe, help each other, and celebrate the victories we have, both large and small!

A BREMEN HIGH SCHOOL UPDATE

Bremen, like all schools, is working hard to keep their students and staff safe amid the Covid-19 pandemic while fulfilling their commitment to providing their students with a quality education. They are conducting their classes remotely and are modifying, canceling, or rescheduling school activities based on current conditions.

We continue to stay in contact with Bremen's leadership, and we will also be making adjustments to our supporting activities as things change.

Bremen's leadership continues to express their sincere appreciation for the Class of '62's efforts to support Bremen and its students.

Go Braves!

Our Scholarship Program
As we mentioned in our last report, for the first time in Bremen's history, on May 28, Bremen hosted a Virtual Senior Honors Nightwhere we once again awarded scholarships to three deserving graduating Seniors.

Bremen thanks you for supporting this program!

Bremen's best & brightest!

The Bremen Hall of Fame
The Bremen Hall of Fame is yet another way for the Class of '62 to support Bremen and, most importantly, to support the Bremen students.

Last year at this time, we were attending the induction of Don Hayward into the Hall of Fame at our annual Homecoming get-together.
Our 11th Hall of Fame Inductee with his lovely wife, Anne!

The good news:

Thanks to your suggestions and support, we have submitted another nomination to the Hall of Fame for 2020!

The bad news:

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Hall of Fame selection process, and associated activities, have been deferred to Spring of 2021. Whether or not these activities will resume by then is currently unknown.

Additionally, for the first time since 2012, we will not be having our annual get-together.

A Personal Note from Rich...

With four children and seven grandchildren, my family has had to adapt to conduct our family fun activities safely. We adhere to medically suggested mitigation protocols such as masks, social-distancing, frequent hand washing, and the use of outside events whenever possible. Even my 2-year-old granddaughter knows the drill!

We don't do this because we're afraid, we do it because it makes good sense -- like looking both ways before crossing the street! Likewise, using these same protocols while shopping, visiting a doctor or dentist, or voting reduces the risk of Covid-19 exposure and spread dramatically.

By the way, if you're concerned about voting:

* Check your registration and with your State and County government to see what voting options exist: www.vote.org

* Early voting (if available) typically has much smaller lines.

* Mail-in voting (if available) is safe and reliable. Make sure you mail your completed ballot at least 14 day prior to election day or use a drop-box anytime up to election day. However, do not let anyone you don't know return it for you.

My main message is that at our age, it's better to be safe than sorry. However, by taking reasonable precautions, we don't have to descend into total isolation to survive. Like anything else in life, there are risks and no guarantees, but letting life pass us by is not good either.

Even if the FDA approves a vaccine by year-end, the Covid-19 threat may be with us for quite some time. Remember, the Covid-19 mitigation steps you take to protect yourself also serve to protect others. This is why we have speed limits, stop signs, spotlights, and seat belts. It's for the common good!

Cheers,

Rich
